Are you starting to train for a Marathon?

Maximizing the Benefits of Running

With the Vancouver Sun Run and various other marathons coming up, many people are starting or have started their training. Are you looking into joining the thousands of people in the marathon circuit? If so, here are just some of the benefits of running.

A study by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology1 finds that 5-10 minutes a day of low intensity running can extend life by 7 years compared to not running at all! In this study they found that people who ran 50 minutes a week or fewer over 15 years were less likely to die from cardiovascular disease compared to those who didn’t run.

What does this mean for you?

  • A low entry level of just 5 minutes of running a day is helpful in warding off cardiovascular disease.
  • Start with 5 minutes and work your way up! As we all know when it comes to exercise, a little bit is good but more is probably better.
    • A study in Denmark2 suggests that the optimal time for running for maximum life longevity is 2.5 hours a week.

Remember that running can trim away some of the risk for cardiovascular disease but it doesn’t entirely eliminate it. The effects of lifestyle, diet and family history still contribute to your lifetime risk.
