Cold Laser Therapy (LLLT) and Pain Management

Have you heard of Cold Laser Therapy? It’s a newer procedure, and is non-invasive. With no extensive recovery time either, it can be a great addition to your healthcare lineup. We’ll typically have you in once a week or so, and your body will use the energy absorbed by the device during your days off to regenerate and heal.

It’s called Cold Laser Therapy because the device doesn’t generate enough heat for you to feel it, making it a very comfortable procedure.

What is Cold Laser Therapy – known as Low-Level Laser Therapy?

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) sometimes known as Low Level Light Therapy or Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the application of light. Light with a wavelength in the red to near-infrared region of the spectrum (660nm–905nm), is generally employed because these wavelengths have the ability to penetrate skin, and soft/hard tissues and are proven in clinical trials to have a positve effect on pain, inflammation and tissue repair.

How does Cold Laser Therapy work, and how can it help me?

The goal of laser therapy is to deliver light energy units, called photons, from red and infrared laser radiation to damaged cells. The cold laser produces an impulse of light at a specific wavelength (usually 600 to 980nm) that minimizes reflection and scattering and maximizes absorption of the energy (in photons) at a desired depth. Experts agree that photons absorbed by cells through laser therapy stimulate mitochondria to accelerate the production of ATP – the energy molecule. This biochemical increase in cell energy is used to transform live cells from a state of illness to a stable, healthy state. The biological effects of low-level laser therapy include increased cell growth, increased cell metabolic activity, faster wound healing, anti-inflammatory action, increased vascular activity, reduced scar tissue formation following tissue damage from cuts, scratches, burns or post-surgery, stimulated nerve function, and pain reduction.
