Achilles Tendonitis
- Achilles Tendon: Connects the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel bone
- Largest tendon in the body
- Achilles Tendonitis: inflammation of the Achilles Tendon and microtears in the tissue around the tendon
- Occurs most often in men over 30
Causes of Achilles Tendonitis
- Overuse: Running uphill, repeated movements in sports, stop and go movements
- Damaged Achilles Tendons
- Overpronation: reduces blood supply to the area
Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis
- Pain along the back of the leg near the heel which worsens with activity
- Ankle Swelling: Lowers one’s Range of Movement (ROM)
- Mild/Severe Ankle Pain when walking or running
- Tight Calf Muscles
Treatment for Achilles Tendonitis
1) Calf Stretching
- Stand straight and put the ball of your left foot against the wall
- Lean forward toward the wall and you should feel a stretch in your calf muscle
2) Reduce high impact exercising (uphill running) and try swimming or cycling
3) Custom Foot Orthotics
- Cushion your feet
- Take strain off the Achilles Tendon
- Combats Overpronation
