Physical Literacy

Physical Literacy

Childhood obesity and inactivity rates are on the rise and to combat this negative trend we have to take action! As a parent or caregiver, ensure your child has access to opportunities to nurture physical literacy development.

Physical Health Canada recommends that children accumulate 60 minutes of moderate intensity to vigorous intensity physical activity daily.

What is Physical Literacy?

  • The ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit healthy development1
  • Without physical literacy development, children withdraw from physical activity and/or sports and turn to inactive and/or unhealthy choices during their leisure time

Physically literate individuals demonstrate the following:

  • Consistently developing the motivation and ability to understand, apply and analyze different movements
  • Demonstrate movements confidently and strategically across a variety of health related physical activities
  • Make healthy, active choices that are beneficial to oneself yet respectful to others and the environment

There are many health benefits to physical literacy, including but not limited to improved fitness, increased strength and feeling better!

Check out the PHE Canada\’s Physical Literacy webpage and see how you and your family can improve your physical literacy!
