Common workplace injuries we see

People come to us after injuries at work such as:

  • Back and neck strains
  • Shoulder, elbow, hip and wrist strains, including carpal tunnel and other nerve-related symptoms
  • Knee and ankle sprains, and leg strains
  • Overuse and repetitive strain injuries, including tendonitis and bursitis
  • Injuries from lifting, falls, slips or knocks, including bruising
  • Recovery after a workplace injury that limits your usual duties

Your acupuncturist assesses your injury and explains whether acupuncture is suitable. If we feel physiotherapy or chiropractic care could better help you, we will recommend it, and those services are also covered by WorkSafeBC on an accepted claim. Another healthcare provider may be recommended if needed.

How it works for a WorkSafeBC injury

1. Report your injury and start your claim

Tell your employer about the injury, then report it to WorkSafeBC to start your claim. Acupuncture is covered once your claim is accepted by WorkSafeBC.

2. Book with your claim number

Book online or call us, and tell us you are booking for a work injury. Bring your claim number. If you are unsure of your claim status, call us and we will help you check.

3. Recover with a plan

Your acupuncturist builds a plan around your injury and your job, and reviews your progress as you go. Our goal is to make you feel better faster.

On an accepted claim, WorkSafeBC covers up to 8 acupuncture visits within the first 8 weeks from your date of injury, with one treatment per day. Treatment beyond 8 weeks needs WorkSafeBC approval. Your claim owner at WorkSafeBC decides what is covered.

Questions before you book

Do I need a claim number to book?

Yes. WorkSafeBC covers acupuncture on an accepted claim, so bring your claim number when you book. If your claim is still pending, call us. A physiotherapy assessment can often start while a claim is pending, and we can help you check your claim status.

How many sessions does WSBC cover?

WorkSafeBC covers up to 8 acupuncture visits within the first 8 weeks from your date of injury, with a maximum of one treatment per day. Treatment beyond 8 weeks needs WorkSafeBC approval. If more treatment is clinically necessary, our team can support you with an extension request to WorkSafeBC, helping you continue your recovery.

Do I pay anything for WorkSafeBC acupuncture?

We bill WorkSafeBC directly. There is no charge to you for care that WorkSafeBC covers on your claim. If you want a service that WorkSafeBC does not cover, we will tell you before you book.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You do not need a doctor’s referral for acupuncture under WorkSafeBC. You do need a WorkSafeBC claim accepted for your injury for us to bill WorkSafeBC.

What happens at my first acupuncture appointment?

Your acupuncturist asks about your injury, your job and your goals, then assesses you. They explain their findings and discuss a plan for your recovery with you before treatment begins.

Can I have acupuncture alongside other treatment?

WorkSafeBC does not cover concurrent acupuncture for the same injury from more than one provider. If you are already receiving physiotherapy, chiropractic care or other treatment for the same injury, tell us when you book so we can confirm what your claim covers.

Do you also treat WorkSafeBC claims with physiotherapy or chiropractic care?

Yes. Backs in Action accepts WorkSafeBC claims for physiotherapy and chiropractic care as well. Call us to confirm the right practitioner for your claim.
