How a WorkSafeBC claim works

Most employees in British Columbia are covered by WorkSafeBC insurance paid for by their employer. If you are hurt at work, a WorkSafeBC claim can cover your health care and recovery, wage-loss benefits and other supports. Here is the short version:

1. Report the injury

Tell your employer right away, and report the injury to WorkSafeBC. You can report online or by phone, even if you have not missed work yet.

2. Get your claim number

WorkSafeBC gives you a claim number and reviews your claim. While it is pending, some care can still start – call us and we will help you check.

3. Claim accepted, care covered

Once your claim is accepted, WorkSafeBC covers approved treatment. We bill WorkSafeBC directly, so there is no cost to you for covered care.

Not sure of your claim status? Call 604-876-9977 and we will help you check before you book.

Four steps to take after a work injury

1. Report your injury to your employer

Your employer is responsible for first aid and for getting you to a hospital, clinic or doctor’s office if you need it. Details recorded early, while the incident is fresh, help your claim later. Keep in touch with your employer about your recovery and any time off work.

2. See a doctor or seek medical attention

Tell every health care provider you see that the injury happened at work. If your doctor recommends or refers you to physiotherapy, chiropractic care or acupuncture, ask them to note that it is for a work-related injury – WorkSafeBC may need that note for your claim.

4. Start your recovery with us

Book an assessment with our team. We will build a treatment plan for your injury and your job, and work with you, your employer and WorkSafeBC toward a safe return to work.

Not sure which service you need?

All three of these services are covered by WorkSafeBC on an accepted claim, and all are available at our clinic. If you are unsure, book any assessment or call us – if a different service would suit your injury better, we will tell you.

Physiotherapy

Movement, exercise and hands-on care to restore strength and function, with a return-to-work plan. Concussion and vestibular (balance or dizziness) injuries from work are also treated by our physiotherapy team.

Who it may suit: Sprains, strains, concussion or balance injuries, and anyone who needs a structured recovery plan.

Questions after a work injury

How do I start a WorkSafeBC claim?

Report your injury to your employer first, then report it to WorkSafeBC: call the Teleclaim Centre if you missed work, or report online if you sought medical attention without missing work. WorkSafeBC will give you a claim number and let you know when your claim is accepted.

Can I get treatment while my claim is still pending?

Often, yes. Some care can start while WorkSafeBC reviews your claim – for example, a chiropractic assessment within 60 days of your injury, or an initial physiotherapy visit. Coverage rules differ by service, so call us before you book and we will help you check.

Do I pay anything for treatment on a WorkSafeBC claim?

We bill WorkSafeBC directly. There is no charge to you for care that WorkSafeBC covers on your claim. If you want a service that WorkSafeBC does not cover, we will tell you before you book.

Which service should I choose: physiotherapy, chiropractic or acupuncture?

It depends on your injury. Physiotherapy suits sprains, strains, concussion and balance injuries, and structured return-to-work plans. Chiropractic care suits back, neck and joint injuries. Acupuncture helps manage pain during recovery. If you are unsure, book any assessment or call us – we will point you to the right service.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You do not need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy, chiropractic care or acupuncture under WorkSafeBC. You do need a WorkSafeBC claim accepted for your injury for us to bill your treatment to WorkSafeBC.

What if my injury is a concussion or causes dizziness?

Concussion and vestibular (balance or dizziness) injuries from work are treated by our physiotherapy team. See our WorkSafeBC physiotherapy page, or call us to discuss your situation.
