Common workplace injuries we see

People come to us after injuries at work such as:

  • Back and neck strains
  • Shoulder, elbow, hip and wrist strains, including carpal tunnel and other nerve-related symptoms
  • Knee and ankle sprains, and leg strains
  • Overuse and repetitive strain injuries, including tendonitis and bursitis
  • Injuries from lifting, falls, slips or knocks, including bruising
  • Recovery after a workplace injury that limits your usual duties

Your physiotherapist assesses your injury and explains whether physiotherapy is suitable. If we feel chiropractic care or acupuncture could better help you, we will recommend it, and those services are also covered by WorkSafeBC on an accepted claim. Another healthcare provider may be recommended if needed.

How it works for a WorkSafeBC injury

1. Book an assessment

Book online or call us. Tell us you are booking for a work injury. If your injury just happened, we can assess you first and bill WorkSafeBC.

2. Have your claim number ready

Treatment after the assessment needs a claim accepted by WorkSafeBC. Bring your claim number. If you are unsure of your claim status, call us and we will help you check.

3. Recover with a plan

Your physiotherapist builds a plan around your injury and your job, and reviews your progress as you go. Our goal is to make you feel better faster.

Physiotherapy for WorkSafeBC claims follows WorkSafeBC’s treatment model, which focuses on active, time-limited treatment that supports a safe return to work. Your claim owner at WorkSafeBC decides what is covered.

Questions before you book

Do I need a claim number to book?

If your work accident happened within the past 60 days, we can proceed with your initial assessment. WorkSafeBC covers an initial assessment within 60 days of your injury, even while your claim is still pending. Bring your claim number if you have one. If you do not have one yet, call us and we can assess you first and bill WorkSafeBC. Treatment after the assessment needs a claim accepted by WorkSafeBC.

How many sessions does WSBC cover?

WorkSafeBC initially covers a treatment period of up to 10 sessions over 5 weeks, on top of your initial assessment. Physiotherapy visits and kinesiology-guided support sessions count toward the same total. If more treatment is clinically necessary, our team can support you with an extension request to WorkSafeBC, helping you continue your recovery.

Do I pay anything for WorkSafeBC physiotherapy?

We bill WorkSafeBC directly. There is no charge to you for care that WorkSafeBC covers on your claim. If you want a service that WorkSafeBC does not cover, we will tell you before you book.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You do not need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist in British Columbia. You do need a WorkSafeBC claim for us to bill WorkSafeBC.

What happens at my first physiotherapy appointment?

Your physiotherapist asks about your injury, your job and your goals, then assesses your movement. They explain their findings and discuss a plan for your recovery with you.

Can kinesiology and exercise programs be part of my care?

Yes, when your physiotherapist feels it is appropriate. Your physiotherapist sets the plan, and some visits can be exercise sessions guided by a kinesiologist. WorkSafeBC decides what is covered on your claim.

Do you also treat WorkSafeBC claims with chiropractic or acupuncture?

Backs in Action accepts WorkSafeBC claims for chiropractic care and acupuncture as well. Call us to confirm the right practitioner for your claim.
