Twisted postures, bent-over stances and swings that generate a great deal of torque repeated over 3-4 hours are a recipe for low back pain from golf.

Golf swings utilize the use and coordination of multiple muscle groups, so it’s not uncommon for one to can hurt their back while playing golf; however with a proper warm up and stretches, one can lower the risk of injury and keep on enjoying the game of golf!

Here are some stretches from our East Vancouver Chiropractor at Backs in Action to help your prepare for a full day on the green!

These stretches are focused on the lower back and the shoulders — the key areas where golfers end up with common sports injuries, such as lower back pain.

Hip Flexor Lunge

  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart
  • Step forward with your right foot into a lunge position
  • Bend both knees with your left knee pointing towards the ground
  • Keep your body upright and your back straight
  • Do not let your right knee pass over the ankle of your left foot
  • Lean forward until you feel a stretch on the front of the left hip
    • If you find your losing your balance try using a golf club to keep your balance
  • Hold for 30-45 seconds
    • Repeat with your other leg

Seated Forward Bend 

  • Sit on a bench or golf cart
    • Keep your knees bent and your feet flat
  • Place your right ankle onto your left knee
    • Relax your right leg so your knee falls to the side
  • Bend forward
    • Keep your back straight
  • Hold for 15 seconds and switch legs
    • Repeat 2 times on each side
  • Gently pull on your bent knee to generate a deeper stretch. You should feel this stretch in your buttock area.

Side Bending Stretch

  • Hold a golf club over your head with your arms straight
  • Slowly bend to 1 side until you feel the stretch along the side of your back
    • Make sure you are not rotating when performing this stretch
  • Hold for 15 seconds and switch arms
    • Repeat twice on each side
