What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathic Doctor: Areas of Focus
Naturopathic medicine is a system of healing that encompasses current knowledge of biomedical science and traditional wisdom and practices. It focuses on supporting the body’s innate capacity to heal and determining the root causes of a person’s health issues. The aim is to promote health, and prevent, diagnose and treat disease. Naturopathic doctors work alongside other healthcare providers in order to ensure you are receiving the best quality of care. Treatments are typically chosen based on the therapeutic order. This means choosing the most effective, least invasive treatments first, and progressing to more intensive treatments only if necessary.
Naturopathic doctors are trained as primary healthcare practitioners and are required to complete four years of undergraduate study before being accepted to an independently accredited naturopathic college. Upon completion of a further four years of naturopathic study, they must pass a series of rigorous licensing examinations as well as provincial board exams specific to the scope of practice in their province before they can practice as a licensed naturopathic doctor.
